Editors Pick: Behind the Alberta Outdoors Rebrand

Have you noticed a “new” magazine on the newsstands? The Alberta Outdoorsmen Magazine is now Alberta Outdoors magazine!

The Alberta Outdoorsmen Magazine was established over 25 years ago when the government awarded Sports Scene Publications Inc. a contract to publish annual hunting and fishing regulations. The contract allowed for the inclusion of stories about Alberta-specific hunting and fishing – an addition that proved popular with the province’s hunters and anglers.

As publisher and editor Rob Miskosky explains “more and more people [were] looking to fill their larders with truly organic foods – wild fish and game.” There was also a new demographic: by 2023 more than 23,000 women hunters bought Wildlife Certificates, representing approximately 15% of Alberta’s resident hunters. The evolving outdoor community was interested in hiking, biking and camping, in addition to the hunting and fishing focus of the magazine.

The editorial team was ready to expand beyond the limitations of the existing niche topics. “We needed a change to refresh and renew our spirits,” says Miskosky. And so, in April 2024, the rebranded and redesigned Alberta Outdoors magazine was officially launched. There were new colours, a new logo, page redesigns, and more pages to accommodate added content. New writers have joined the roster of longtime contributors, providing fresh perspectives and content about hiking, biking and camping, and wilderness survival expertise, including Alberta-based writers Cailynn Klingbeil and Tanya Koob. Today, you’ll find articles on a broad range of topics, such as gold panning  and fall foraging.

And the rebrand is working! Despite some initial resistance from the existing readership and community, the feedback has since been tremendously positive. Retail sales and the subscriber base are growing, and readers are looking forward to many more years to come for Alberta Outdoors.

The new Alberta Outdoors magazine might just be the perfect gift for someone on your holiday list! Don’t forget about the Read Alberta subscription promotion, where you can subscribe to two participating magazines (including Alberta Outdoors, of course) for 50% off the total cost!
