Dry January? Five Alberta Magazines Share Non-Alcoholic Options

Where December is a time of (well-deserved) indulgence to cap off the year, January is often a time to reset the system for a new year ahead. If you’re opting for a dry January, or if you just prefer a non-alcoholic beverage, we’ve found five magazines exploring the many options available to you!

In “The Great Without: Alcohol-Free Wines, Beers, and Spirits are Here to Stay,”Culinaire Magazine explores the booming availability of non-alcoholic options with a healthy dose of skepticism and a fascinating look at how these drinks are created. When you really think about it, what makes wine without alcohol…wine? Learn what the critics have to say, and see a list of options (wine, beers, and spirits) that make the cut.

The Tomato food & drink considers the many available no- or low-alcohol (no/lo) beverages in “Wine Maven: No/Lo Revolution,” with specific suggestions alongside details about how these drinks are brewed, fermented, and blended. This includes JoAnne Pearce’s Mock-Ups Mocktails, which use Alberta haskaps, saskatoons and Token’s Bitters to create alternative adult beverages.

The Edmonton entrepreneur was also profiled by Edify in “The Mocktail Grows Up” back in 2021, where we learn how she challenged herself to create elaborate mocktails at home during the pandemic, and quickly grew the hobby into a successful business venture.

Lastly, we found two, of what are surely many more, magazines highlighting the fabulous mocktails you’ll find at Calgary restaurants. We see that the non-alcoholic drinks at both Calcutta Cricket Club and Kama have been recommended by Avenue Calgary (“Where to Go for Non-Alcoholic Drinks in Calgary”) and Savour Calgary (“Calgary Restaurants and Bars Serving Cool Mocktails”), so these are sure to be a hit.

With this many flavourful and creative options for a dry January, let’s reframe an annual tradition of abstaining from alcohol into an opportunity to explore something new.
