Tomorrow is the tenth year Canadians have celebrated Canadian Independent Bookstore Day, and that’s a Big Deal!
Local independent bookstores are so much more than simply places to buy books; they are the backbone of local literary communities. Local readers and writers meet at their local bookstores during books signings and launches, or at special readings and story times. Or simply because that’s where like-minded book lovers go to find solace.
In some communities, the local independents have been taking care of book-loving communities for generations; in others, new bookshops are the catalysts for progressive change. Sometimes, local independent bookstores are both. We live in a precarious moment when books are being banned or challenged at an alarming rate, and it is good to remember that it was a local independent, Little Sisters Book & Art Emporium in Vancouver, that helped confirm freedom of expression and equality rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
For local writers, smaller bookstores are a godsend: they stock books that the larger chains won’t sell, books that are not on national of international bestseller lists or that are published my local independent publishers, including those published by members of the Book Publishers Association of Alberta.
So, when you reach for your favourite book by a local author, think where you bought it. Chances are, it was through your local Indie. When you’ve finished your morning coffee (and that book), enjoy the glorious spring weather by taking a trip to your local independent bookstore. Buy another book. Support your reading and writing community.
There are other fun ways to celebrate Canadian Independent Bookstore day, like entering the Canadian Independent Booksellers Association’s annual contest for book lovers.
Local bookshops across Canada have planned activities for the big day, so visit you local Indie and see what author events, giveaways, discounts, and more are available in your area.
