Whether you’re a parent, a student, or a teacher, you’re likely adjusting to a new schedule for September. Now that we’ve gotten our littles (or ourselves) back to school, let’s turn our attention to being back at school. Alberta magazines have some great insight for this season of changes and challenges.
Calgary’s Child is always an amazing resource for parents and caregivers. Their article “Back-to-School Butterflies” offers helpful advice to support kids experiencing some unease and anxiety in these early days, with information on what to look for and how to help calm those nerves.
The ATA Magazine of the Alberta Teachers’ Association has content for teachers, administrators, and anyone interested in learning more about the school environment and teaching profession. The Spring 2024 article “The Loud and the Quiet…And Everyone In Between” is an important reminder that both “extroverted and introverted teachers bring different strengths.” Rest assured that there is always a teacher who can recognize and support your child’s particular needs.
This YMM Parent piece on “The Importance of Pride in Schools – Supporting Queer Youth” from 2023 feels especially important as students return to school this month. As the article outlines, inclusive and safe spaces are crucial for student wellbeing and the fostering of a more accepting school environment.
Lastly, you can always plan for a different approach to the next school year by “embracing travel as not only a lifestyle but also as a one-of-a-kind educational opportunity for school-aged children.” This T8N Magazine article “Travelling with Kids, During School” (2019) describes one family’s experience taking a year off school to travel. It can’t hurt to dream big!
