If you have young kids, you might think you’re maxed out on sweet treats for the season. But it’s time to put down that cheap chocolate bunny (yes, we know you sneak from that basket of goodies, we all do it) and pick up something truly worthy of your sweet tooth. We’re celebrating confectionery across the province with profiles from four Alberta magazines.
The first stop of your sugary tour is at the Grandin Bakery in St. Albert, where brothers Marcel and Bruce Hooimeyer are serving up everything from croissants to cookies. Learn all about the longtime family business with “Meet You There: Grandin Bakery” from T8N Magazine.
We travel just a bit south to the province’s capital with The Tomato food & drink’s “South Side Sweet Treats” and a delectable journey of the Whyte Avenue area. For allergen-free treats, a stop at Food in the Nud is in order, and the traditionalist will want to check out Empress Bakery. Wear your most comfortable walking shoes, and stretchiest pants, to visit the seven bakeries featured by the magazine.
For our next stop, we’ll explore all things chocolate with Savour Calgary’s story on “A Sweet Evolution of Chocolate in Calgary.” Did you know that “Alberta’s notably dry climate provides the perfect conditions for chocolate making”? No wonder it’s where Bernard Callebaut’s laid the foundations of a chocolate empire in the 90s and early 2000s, culminating in his Master Chocolat storefront in Calgary today. Learn more in an interview with chocolatier Dallas Southcott, who co-founded The Chocolate Lab with his wife Eva Choi.
The final note of this tasty tour comes from Wider Horizon’s “Sweet Success” and a look at Lethbridge Polytechnic alumni who were able to “turn their passion for sweet treats into thriving businesses.” Be sure to fill up a bag of bulk candy for the road at How Sweet Inc. in downtown Lethbridge.
Take this as your sign to head out on a tour of the province with the “sweetest” spring road trip of all!
