Alberta’s Story Unfolds: Celebrating EDGE Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing’s Enriching Legacy

Alberta’s rich cultural heritage and identity are beautifully woven into the captivating tales published by EDGE Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing. As one of the strongest communities of regional publishers in North America, Alberta’s book publishers, such as EDGE, play a vital role in telling the province’s story, both at home and around the world. Producing works by local, national, and international authors, EDGE has been a trailblazer in Alberta’s literary scene for the past 26 years, capturing the hearts and minds of readers, educators, and the general public alike.

Founded in 2000 by Brian Hades, EDGE Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing was born out of a passion for genre literature and a desire to create a dedicated publishing house for genre fiction—especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror—in Alberta. Hades’ deep-rooted involvement in Alberta’s arts and culture scene, along with his background in theatre, music, and genre literature, has provided the perfect foundation for EDGE’s imaginative publications.

Throughout its illustrious history, EDGE has published numerous award-winning books, including Marie Jakober’s The Black Chalice, K. A. Bedford’s Orbital Burn, and J. A. Cullum’s Lyskarion. These enchanting tales not only showcase the transformative power of science fiction and fantasy literature but also illuminate the unique spirit and vision that define Alberta’s creative community.

EDGE’s captivating publications have made a significant impact on Alberta’s readers and educators, fostering a love for discovery and reflecting the province’s future. By nurturing creativity and igniting curiosity, EDGE’s science fiction and fantasy works have inspired readers to become writers. In doing so, they contribute to Alberta’s provincial goals of innovation, growth, and development.

Additionally, EDGE’s commitment to publishing works by both established and emerging authors has given voice to a diverse array of storytellers, further enriching Alberta’s literary landscape. As a leader in regional publishing, EDGE has not only made a name for itself within Alberta but has also garnered international recognition, with their books earning nominations and awards, such as the Independent Publisher Book Award, the Canadian Sunburst Award, the American Book of the Year Award, the Australian Aurealis Award, and the Phillip K. Dick Award.

As we celebrate EDGE Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing’s unique Alberta story, we also acknowledge the essential role that imaginative literature plays in cultivating creativity, promoting innovation, and inspiring a passion for learning among the province’s residents. With over 30 publishing companies in Alberta, the province’s thriving literary community continues to make an indelible mark on the world stage.

In the years to come, EDGE Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing will undoubtedly continue to captivate readers and educators with their enthralling tales, further solidifying Alberta’s reputation as a hub of creativity and innovation. By honouring the legacy of EDGE and the countless other publishers who contribute to Alberta’s Story, we celebrate the powerful impact that literature has on shaping our collective future.
