The best and brightest talents in the province’s magazine industry celebrate the Alberta Magazine Awards.

The annual event, hosted by the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association (AMPA) and judged by industry leaders showcases the outstanding work of magazine professionals in Alberta.

Alberta magazines connect to the neighbourhoods, cities and landscapes in which their readers live and are an important part of creating vibrant and growing communities. The Alberta Magazine Awards program honours and celebrates that work by highlighting the talent of Alberta’s magazine creators, art directors, writers, photographers, editors and illustrators.

The 2023 Awards Gala celebrated the excellence in magazine content published in 2022 by celebrating 18 Showcase categories and four Achievement award categories. Magazine of the Year recipients were also announced for Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Windspeaker magazine founder Bert Crowfoot received the Achievement in Publishing award for his significant industry contributions as a trailblazer in Indigenous publishing. During Crowfoot’s 40-plus year career, he has delivered coverage that has not only challenged federal and provincial governments, but has held Indigenous leadership to account as well. The publication has been a game-changer for Indigenous news reporting in Alberta and across the country. Jeremy Klaszus was named Editor of the Year for his accomplishments as both an amplifier of underrepresented voices and a mentor to emerging writers at The Sprawl. Judges said Klaszus “trusts his writers to tell stories in their own ways, bringing fresh and challenging perspectives while reflecting The Sprawl’s core values.”

The Sprawl was also named Alberta Magazine of the Year. Jurors said the magazine “has a keen understanding of who it is and who its readers are.” Thoughtful and engaging content, exceptional reporting and a user friendly website carried the digital magazine to top spot in Alberta.

Magazines from all over the province earned podium spots for their outstanding work. You can see the full list of the 2023 award winners and read their award-winning entries online.
