It wasn’t easy, but we’ve selected just some of the amazing 2023/24 Alberta Magazine Awards recipients for our year in review. Dive right in and read them all at once, or enjoy a single story a day.

6. Revisiting a Loaded History by Joseph Paris, Galleries West. Parks Canada’s efforts to bolster reconciliation by including Indigenous art at Sir John A. Macdonald’s former home, now a national historic site.
7. Riccardo Baldini, Strathcona Microgreens by Daniela Zenari, The Tomato food & drink. Riccardo Baldini found a way to follow his heart and ambition in the face of something that would derail most people.
8. The Great Overwhelm by Celeste, ATA Magazine. A teacher describes their journey with mental health.
9. The Hollowing of the Calgary Herald by Jeremy Klaszus, The Sprawl. A deep dive on what happens when a city’s newspaper is decimated.
10. Three Poems by Omar Ramadan, The Polyglot. A poem blending English and Arabic to reflect on family relationships.
11. Whitewashing History by Gretchen Albers, Alberta Views. The backlash against teaching Indigenous perspectives.
12. Who Wants Albertans to Gamble More? by Evan Osenton, Alberta Views. Find out who is encouraging us to gamble away our finances—and why.
