Listen Up: Podcasts From Alberta Magazines

Connect with your favourite magazine content while you’re commuting, on the treadmill, walking the dog, or doing the dishes. I know what you’re thinking – you can’t hold a magazine while you’re doing these things, can you? Never fear, the magazine podcast is here! Enjoy diverse local content when you’re on the go.

Thrive (formerly Legacy in Action), the award-winning magazine of the Edmonton Community Foundation, has produced over 180 episodes of their Well Endowed podcast to dig deep on a variety of topics related to their endowment fund and legacy projects. Recent episodes include conversations about women in the arts with SkirtsAfire, animal welfare with the Alberta SPCA, and restorative justice with the Youth Restorative Action Project (YRAP).

Mother and daughter business partners Jan and Erin Johnson, co-founders of Trailblazher, host a podcast to further explore the stories of the rural women featured in their magazine. Whether you’re “rural, rural-hearted or intrigued by the rural way of life” there’s something in there for you. The podcast is currently on hiatus, but dip into the episode archives to learn about lavender farming with Gemma James-Smith, growing a successful yogurt business with The Painterland Sisters, healthy eating habits and self-acceptance with Amy Soudek, and even hear an exclusive interview with Amber Marshall of the popular Heartland tv series.

There’s a different take on the topic of rural life from The GrainsWest Podcast, “connecting farmers, food and ideas.” You don’t have to be a grain farmer to appreciate the episodes “Malt Magic and Beautiful Beer,” “Alcohol-Free Beer Goes Big” and “Craft Maltsters Add On-Farm Value” (are you sensing a theme here?).

The Sprawlcast is a carefully-produced extension of The Sprawl’s multimedia platform, “a show for curious Calgarians who want a deeper understanding of the city they call home.” Each episode delves into an issue with in-depth journalism on diverse topics, such as “A city of trees: The story and struggle of Calgary’s urban forest” and “The fragility of Calgary’s water supply.”

So pop in those earbuds or turn up that dial, Alberta’s magazines bring their great content to the airwaves just for you!
