How To Do…Anything! “How-to” Advice in Alberta Magazines

You can search online for advice on how to do just about anything, but how do you know you’re getting good advice? You need to trust the experts, and that’s exactly who you’ll find sharing advice in Alberta’s magazines.

We had a hard time choosing just five of the many helpful “how to” articles on all kinds of topics in our diverse selection of Alberta magazines. Here are a few to get you started on your DIY journey!

airdrielife magazine knows how overwhelming it can be to decorate a home. Kim Purvis of Aurora Decor Interiors shares her thoughts on “How to get an A+ for accessorizing”: “Accessorizing well completes a beautiful room just as it does a great outfit. On the flip side, accessorizing can be a major distraction and make a room feel very uninviting. There are a few common mistakes I see that are easily fixed.”

While we’re on the topic of accessorizing the home, let’s talk about accessorizing the home bar! Savour Calgary’s article on “How to Stock Your Bar Like a Pro” is as relevant today as it was during pandemic quarantine. “Jiggers, shakers, bitters, aperitifs … what was once hard to find for the average consumer is now only a click away.” JD Darnes, beverage director at Cocktail Concierge and Jesse Willis, co-owner at Vine Arts, share their thoughts on the must-have tools and beverages.

Did somebody say wine? We have the perfect accompaniment, with advice on “How to Make Risotto” from Alberto Alboreggia, Sorrentino’s exec chef, in The Tomato “You must use the right ingredients. There are three kinds of rice for risotto—arborio, which is longer and good for seafood risotto. Canaroli is short and fat and my favourite is vialone nano.”

That’s enough time inside the home, let’s get outside! It can be a battle getting the kids (and yourself) away from the screens and out into the sun. You’re sure to succeed with these ideas in Calgary’s Child from Christine Latreille, of the non-profit Active for Life, on “How to Make a DIY Obstacle Course Outside.” “To get kids outside, help them flex their creative muscles, and have them get an all-over workout, here are some inexpensive everyday items that you can use to get your kids started creating an obstacle course of their own.”

Okay, enough fun, we’re bringing you back inside to the screen with techlifetoday’s advice on “How To Use AI in Your Job Search (And How Not To) “If you ask an AI tool to generate a list of other AI tools to help you in your job search, it will produce a dozen or so in seconds. It’s that easy. Then you just plug in the right info and watch the interview requests roll in! Tempting, isn’t it? But will that actually lead to a job?” Academic and career adviser Melissa Rudachuk, and education coordinator Jacob Caley at NAIT, weigh in with best practices.
