Whether you’re hosting guests, or enjoying a quiet holiday at home this year, you might be looking for fun activities to celebrate the season. Alberta’s magazines are full of unique ways to spend your winter break.
Fort McMurray
Your McMurray Magazine’s Holiday Guide 2024 has the Fort McMurray event listings of the season! From Christmas in the City and a Grinchmas party for the kids, to Council’s Holiday Luncheon for Seniors and Elders and the Winter Makers Market, there’s something in here for everyone in your family.
Edmonton
You’ll find something for every moment of the holidays in the EDify list of “25 Things to Do in Edmonton This December.” Enjoy your favourite holiday film at the Stanley A. Milner Library, with a viewing every Sunday. Listen to candlelight carols in the Muttart Conservatory feature pyramid. Have a ball at the beach on New Year’s Eve at the West Edmonton Mall, complete with foam pit and indoor fireworks!
Airdrie
The art and culture scene in Airdrie is evolving as the city grows and, as airdrielife magazine shares, Bert Church LIVE Theatre (BCLT) is seeing increased interest in “family-friendly content at a budget-friendly price point.” Their annual holiday show for 2024 is perfect for all ages. Get your tickets for The Christmas Skates by DIY Theatre, running December 20-22, 2024.
Calgary
It’s never too early to enjoy the seasonal light displays around town, and Avenue Calgary has you covered with “Where to See Holiday Light Displays in Calgary.” You can find the best and brightest right in your community with the Lighten Up Calgary map, or hop in the car to visit some of the city’s larger light displays.
The Rockies
The sun sets so early in December and January, and there’s just not enough time in the day to experience all the mountains have to offer. Never fear, the fun continues after hours with Where Canadian Rockies list of activities to help you “Love the Mountains at Night.” From tubing to the gondola, there’s something for everyone!
Lethbridge and Medicine Hat
Looking for an indoor activity on a chilly winter day? Galleries West has an extensive listing of current exhibitions in Southern Alberta. “Game Play” at Lethbridge’s Galt Museum and Archives shows “how different activities have evolved over the years. As games are played, they grow and change as participants invent new rules, tricks and techniques.” Ceramicist Koi Neng Liew turns his attention to axolotls in the “Pollywog” show at the Esplanade Art Gallery in Medicine Hat, exploring “baby-faced amphibians as potential conduits for reimagining resiliency and transformation in moving with grief.”
At home anywhere in Alberta
For many of us, our favourite winter activity is staying warm at home, snuggled in our coziest chair, reading something fabulous. Take this opportunity to explore the over 50 Alberta eMagazines available (for free) from your regional library!
